About Us

In November 2008, Americans overwhelmingly voted for change by electing Barack Obama President of the United States. But winning an election only provided the opportunity for change.

It is not a guarantee.

For change to become real, people from all walks of life must work together with the same effort and commitment after the election as they had in the days leading up to it.

This was the reason for creating Change That Works.

Change That Works is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building on the momentum for change created by SEIU's Change That Works campaign. In less than a year, the Change That Works campaign has demonstrated that targeted, on-the-ground organizing can develop thousands of new progressive activists and shape the public debate.

Working in 10 targeted states represented by Members of Congress who often determine legislative outcomes, Change That Works employs full-time, experienced staff and organizers who develop progressive leaders and activists to enable them to take action in support of key progressive legislative priorities.

Change That Works operates in Arkansas, Colorado, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, and Virginia.

Change That Works operates in places that have not traditionally had a strong progressive infrastructure. To build progressive movements, organizers work to bring new voices to the political process by recruiting, developing and mobilizing Americans in their local communities – many of whom have never been involved in politics before.

By investing in local leaders and activists, Change That Works transcends the traditional legislative campaign model. It is a vehicle for individuals to act collectively on their progressive values.
